How to Identify Rats and Rodents
Rats and mice stay out of sight, but they leave a trail. Knowing whether you have roof rats, Norway rats or mice shapes the whole rodent control plan, so start by reading the evidence. Look for fresh gnaw marks on food packaging, wood trim, pipes and wiring. Check for dark, greasy smears along walls, beams and the edges of openings. Those come from oily fur rubbing the same route night after night, and the darker and wider the smear, the more traffic it has seen. Droppings pile up along these routes too, and their size helps tell rats from mice. At night, listen for scratching in the attic.
Rat Behavior to Watch For
Rats are mammals that have followed people around the world, and they do well almost anywhere food and shelter are close together. In Florida that means attics, garages, sheds, barns, docks, gardens and brushy fence lines. Like all rodents, they have long front incisors that never stop growing, plus flat cheek teeth for grinding food. To keep those incisors worn down they gnaw constantly on wood, plastic, soft metal, insulation and wiring, which is where most of their damage comes from.
What Do Rats Eat?
Nearly anything. Rats lean toward grains, seeds, meat and fruit, and they will also eat pet food, bird seed, garbage and even soap. An adult needs roughly a tenth of its body weight in food each day, and it ruins far more than it eats by leaving urine, droppings and hair behind. Most wild rats live about a year. In that time they can damage property and carry germs and parasites that affect people and pets.
When Are Rats Most Active?
Mostly at night. Rats see poorly, but their hearing, smell, taste and touch are sharp, and their whiskers help them feel their way along walls in the dark. They learn their territory in detail and remember where food, water, shelter and obstacles are. Anything new in that space makes them cautious, so a freshly placed trap or bait station is often ignored for several days before a rat will go near it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Rats
What kinds of rats are common in Florida?
Roof rats are the most common in Florida. They are excellent climbers and often live in attics, palm trees and roofs. Norway rats are heavier, burrow in the ground and are usually found around foundations, sewers and garbage.
What are the signs of rats in the attic?
Scratching or scurrying sounds at night, droppings in the attic or garage, chewed insulation or wires, and greasy marks where rats travel along beams or pipes.
Can rats damage my home?
Yes. Rats gnaw constantly, and chewed wiring can create a fire risk. They also tear up insulation and contaminate attics and storage areas with droppings and urine.
How does Florida Bug Control remove rats?
We locate entry points and activity, remove the rats, seal the openings they use, and recommend steps like trimming tree limbs away from the roof. Call 1-855-624-2847 to schedule.
