Fleas at work? A business does not have to be a kennel, groomer or vet clinic to get fleas. One dog or cat visiting with an employee or customer can drop flea eggs that hatch later in carpet and upholstery. In Florida, warm and humid weather lets fleas breed most of the year.
The cat flea is the species found most often, and it bites dogs, cats and people. Adults stay on a host and feed many times a day. Cat fleas can also carry murine typhus and dog tapeworm.
Is it fleas?
A flea bite leaves a small red spot with a single puncture, usually around the ankles. It itches but rarely swells much. Spider bites often show two marks, and mosquito bites tend to swell. To check, walk the area in white socks or lay white paper on the floor for a few minutes. Fleas show up as small dark specks.
Inspection
Most flea calls start with staff or customers complaining about bites. Your technician asks where people were bitten, whether animals visit the business and where they rest. Then we check carpet, rugs, upholstered seating, waiting areas, crates, and spots outside where animals lie against the building. You are welcome to walk the inspection with us.
Before treatment
- Vacuum every area where fleas were found, especially where animals rest. Seal the bag or canister contents in a plastic bag and put it in an outside trash can.
- Wash animal bedding on the hottest setting it can take, or throw it out.
- Clear debris and clutter from along the outside walls.
- Have any animals on site treated by a veterinarian on the day of service so they do not bring fleas back in.
Treatment and follow-up
We remove pet bowls and animal items from the area first. Indoors, we treat the surfaces animals use and the cracks along baseboards. Outside, we treat resting spots against the building and any area that could not be cleared. Keep people and animals out of treated areas until they dry. Flea eggs and pupae can hatch after the first visit, so a follow-up is usually part of the plan. After each visit, your designated contact hears what was found and treated. If pests come back between scheduled visits, we come back and re-treat at no charge. Learn more about cat fleas.
