Birds and Pigeons

Florida Bug Control service van

The outside inspection looks at every ledge, beam and fixture where a bird could perch or roost. Signs of activity include droppings on the ground or walls below a perch, loose feathers, nest material, eggs and young birds. Favorite perches include:

  • Rooflines, peaks and gutters
  • Open beams under awnings and canopies
  • Outdoor light fixtures and parking lot lights
  • Signs and lettering on the building
  • Rooftop air conditioning units, vents and exhaust pipes

Our technician records everything found during the inspection, and you are welcome to walk the property with us. The findings go into a simple site map with photos, so you can see where birds are landing, nesting and leaving droppings.

Control and Prevention Measures

Live Trapping. Traps stocked with food and water reduce the number of birds at a site. They are checked at least twice a week so birds are not left in them, and they are usually set on the roof where customers and staff will not see them. Trapping often comes before netting, so birds already roosting or nesting are not sealed in. Pigeons find their way back from long distances, so trapped birds are handled according to state and federal wildlife rules rather than released nearby. Only unprotected species such as pigeons, house sparrows and European starlings are trapped.

Nest Removal. Nests, eggs and debris are taken down by hand, bagged, sealed and hauled off the property. Because dried droppings can release fungal spores, the technician wears gloves and a respirator, plus protective coveralls on large jobs. Active nests of protected native birds are left alone until the young have gone.

Cleaning and Power Washing. Before any deterrents go up, droppings and stains are cleared and the surfaces sanitized. Most of this is power washing canopies, walls, sidewalks and benches where dried droppings have built up.

Deterrents and Exclusion. Based on what the site needs, we put up one or more of these:

  • Netting: a strong mesh stretched across beams, canopies and other open areas so birds cannot get in to roost.
  • Bird Spikes: strips of blunt spikes fixed to rooflines, eaves, ledges, beams and signs so birds have nowhere to land.
  • Wire Deterrents: flexible arms or tensioned wires that sweep the space above light poles and rooftop units, leaving no room to perch.
  • Shock Track: a low-profile electric strip on ledges and rooflines that gives birds a mild jolt that startles them without injury. It runs on building power or a small solar charger.
  • Ledge Slopes: clear angled panels fitted over sills, ledges and beams so birds slide off instead of settling.
