Pest Control in White Springs, FL

Pest Control in White Springs, FL

White Springs is a small town in Hamilton County on the banks of the Suwannee River, home to Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Florida Bug Control provides residential and commercial pest control for homes and businesses in and around White Springs.

Old Houses, River Trails and Pests in White Springs

White Springs grew up as a resort town around its sulfur spring on the Suwannee River, and many of the homes near the center of town are older wood-frame houses with deep porches, wood siding and big shade trees overhead. That style of house is wonderful to live in and easy for pests to use. Porch ceilings, railings and window trim are favorite spots for brown widow spiders, whose spiky round egg sacs are easy to spot once you know them, and for paper wasps, which build nests under porch roofs and window frames from late spring into fall.

The river corridor is the other big influence. The Florida National Scenic Trail runs through town along the Suwannee, and Big Shoals State Park and the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park draw hikers, paddlers and campers to the woods around White Springs. Those shaded riverbank trails are good habitat for ticks from spring into early summer, and residents who walk the trails or let dogs roam the woods tend to bring them home. The Florida Folk Festival each spring at the state park brings crowds right when that season is underway.

Keeping an Old Porch Pest-Free

• Sweep porch ceilings, corners and railings with a long-handled broom every couple of weeks to clear webs and egg sacs.
• Knock down small wasp nests early in spring, before colonies grow.
• Caulk gaps where wood siding meets trim and fill old nail holes.
• Trim branches back so they do not touch the roof or porch.

Rivers, springs, farmland and wooded lots make this part of North Florida a busy place for pests. Fire ants build mounds in yards and pastures, mosquitoes breed near the river and low ground after rain, ticks wait in tall grass and woods, and mice and rats move into homes and barns when nights turn cool.
