Grubs

Lawn Grub Facts

White grubs are the larvae of scarab beetles such as May beetles, June beetles and masked chafers. They are plump, C-shaped and creamy white, with a brown head and six legs, and grow to about 1 inch long. Grubs live in the soil and feed on grass roots.

In Florida, grubs damage St. Augustine, Bahia, Bermuda and zoysia lawns. Adult beetles lay eggs in the lawn in late spring and summer, and the young grubs feed close to the surface, which is when they cause the most harm and are easiest to control.

Signs of Grub Damage

  • Irregular brown or wilted patches that do not recover with watering
  • Turf that feels spongy and lifts up like a loose carpet because the roots are gone
  • Armadillos, raccoons, skunks and birds digging in the lawn to eat the grubs
  • Many beetles flying around porch lights in early summer

How to Check for Grubs

Cut three sides of a one-foot square of turf at the edge of a damaged area, peel it back and count the grubs in the soil. A few grubs are normal. If you find more than about five to ten per square foot, treatment is usually worth it.

How to Prevent Grub Problems

  • Water deeply but less often so roots grow deep and strong
  • Mow at the right height for your grass type
  • Avoid heavy watering and fertilizing during peak beetle egg-laying season
  • Fill in bare spots, which attract egg-laying beetles

Our Grub Treatment

We inspect your lawn to confirm grubs are the cause, since fungus, chinch bugs and drought can look similar. If grubs are present, we time the treatment to when they are young and feeding near the surface, and recommend care that helps your lawn recover. Seeing other lawn pests?
