Moths
Pests We Treat
Moth Facts
Most moths you see in Florida live outdoors and cause no trouble. The ones that matter indoors are pantry moths and clothes moths. In both cases it is the larvae, not the adult moths, that do the damage.
Pantry Moths
The Indian meal moth is the most common pantry moth. Adults are about 1/2 inch long, with wings that are pale gray near the body and coppery-bronze toward the tips. Their larvae feed on flour, cereal, nuts, dried fruit, birdseed and pet food, and leave silky webbing in the food.
Clothes Moths
Webbing clothes moths and casemaking clothes moths are small, golden to tan moths that avoid light. Their larvae eat wool, silk, fur, feathers and other animal fibers, leaving holes in sweaters, rugs and upholstery. Clothes stored dirty are most at risk.
Signs of a Moth Problem
- Small moths flying in a zigzag pattern in the kitchen or closet
- Webbing, clumps or small larvae inside food packages
- Holes in wool or silk clothing, rugs or blankets
- Small silk cases or tubes on fabric in dark closets
How to Prevent Moths
- Keep dry foods in airtight containers and clean up spilled food and birdseed
- Wash or dry clean wool and silk before storing them
- Store seasonal clothing in sealed bags or bins
- Vacuum closets, rugs and the edges of carpet regularly
Getting Rid of Moths
Moths keep returning until the source is found. We inspect your pantry or closets to locate the infested food or fabric, help you remove it, treat the cracks and shelves where larvae hide, and use monitoring traps to confirm the problem is gone.
