Millipedes

Millipede Facts

Millipedes are not insects. They are long, segmented arthropods with two pairs of legs on most body segments, and they curl into a tight coil when disturbed. They live in damp soil, mulch and leaf litter, where they feed on decaying plant material.

Millipedes do not bite or sting, and they do not damage your home. Some species release a fluid when handled that can stain skin and irritate the eyes, so wash your hands if you touch one.

Millipedes in Florida

  • Yellow-banded millipede: a dark millipede with yellow rings that has spread through South Florida. After heavy rains it can move in large numbers, covering walls, patios and pool decks.
  • Florida ivory millipede: a cream-colored native millipede found in leaf litter and mulch across the state.
  • Greenhouse millipede: a small brown millipede common in potted plants, flower beds and greenhouses.

Problem?

Why Millipedes Come Inside

Millipedes usually come indoors by accident. Heavy rain floods their habitat and dry weather drives them to look for moisture, so they crawl under doors and into garages and ground-floor rooms. Most die quickly indoors because the air is too dry.

How to Keep Millipedes Out

  • Keep mulch and leaf litter thin and pulled a few inches back from the foundation
  • Fix leaks and make sure gutters and downspouts carry water away from the house
  • Install door sweeps and seal gaps along the bottom of walls and around garage doors
  • Avoid overwatering flower beds next to the house

Our Millipede Treatment

We look for the damp areas near your foundation where millipedes are breeding, recommend changes to mulch and drainage, and apply a perimeter treatment that stops them before they reach your doors. For heavy yellow-banded millipede migrations, we focus on the areas where they are gathering.
