Scorpions

Scorpion Facts

Scorpions are arachnids, related to spiders and ticks. They have eight legs, a pair of pincers and a curled tail that ends in a stinger. They hunt at night for crickets, roaches and other small insects, and spend the day hiding under bark, boards, rocks and debris.

Scorpions Found in Florida

  • Hentz striped scorpion: the most common scorpion in Florida, found across the state. It is tan to brown, usually with darker stripes, and about 2 to 2 1/2 inches long.
  • Slender brown scorpion: a larger, dark reddish-brown scorpion found mostly in South Florida and the Keys.
  • Florida bark scorpion: small and yellowish, found in South Florida, often under tree bark and around palms.

Florida scorpions are not considered deadly. A sting usually feels like a bee or wasp sting, with pain and swelling at the site. Seek medical care right away if the person stung is a small child, an older adult, or shows signs of an allergic reaction.

Why Scorpions Come Indoors

Scorpions move indoors looking for shelter, moisture and food. They slip through gaps under doors, around pipes and in weep holes, and often turn up in garages, bathrooms, closets and attics. Homes with lots of insects inside tend to attract more scorpions.

How to Keep Scorpions Out

  • Move woodpiles, bricks and yard debris away from the house
  • Keep mulch and leaf litter thin near the foundation
  • Add door sweeps and weatherstripping, and seal gaps around pipes and wires
  • Shake out shoes, gloves and towels that have been left on the floor or outside
  • Control the insects scorpions feed on, such as crickets and cockroaches

Our Scorpion Treatment

We inspect the outside of your home for hiding spots and entry points, treat the perimeter, cracks and voids where scorpions shelter, and help you seal the gaps they use to get in. Reducing their food supply is part of the plan, so we treat for the insects they hunt as well.
