Weevil Facts
Weevils are small beetles, usually about 1/8 inch long, with a long snout. In Florida homes they show up in the pantry, where they feed on whole grains, rice, dried beans, seeds, cereal and pasta. Female weevils lay eggs inside individual kernels, and the larvae grow inside the grain where you cannot see them.
Common Pantry Weevils
- Rice weevil: dark brown with four faint orange spots on its back. It can fly and is common in warm climates like Florida.
- Maize weevil: very similar to the rice weevil, slightly larger, and a strong flier.
- Granary weevil: shiny dark brown with no spots. It cannot fly and is usually brought in with stored grain.
- Bean weevil: a short, stout beetle that develops inside dried beans and peas.
Weevils do not bite people, spread disease or damage your home. The cost is ruined food, and an infestation can spread from one package to everything nearby.
Signs of Weevils
- Small dark beetles in food packages or crawling on pantry shelves
- Tiny round holes in rice, beans or kernels
- Fine powder or dust at the bottom of containers
- Weevils gathering near windows, since many species fly toward light
How to Prevent Weevils
- Check packages for damage and insects before you buy them
- Store grains, rice, flour and beans in airtight glass, metal or heavy plastic containers
- Freeze new grains and flour for four days to kill any eggs inside
- Use older products first and clean up spills on shelves right away
