Earwigs are slender, reddish-brown to black insects up to about 1 inch long, easy to recognize by the pair of pincers at the end of the body. In Florida, the ring-legged earwig is the one most often found in and around homes.
Despite the old myth, earwigs do not crawl into people’s ears. They can give a light pinch if handled, but they are not dangerous and do not spread disease. They come out at night and feed on decaying plants, small insects and sometimes seedlings and soft fruit.
Where Earwigs Live
- Under mulch, leaves, mats, stones and potted plants
- Along damp foundations, in flower beds and around leaky outdoor faucets
- Indoors, in bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens and under sinks
Why Earwigs Come Indoors
Earwigs need moisture. When it is very hot and dry, or after heavy rain, they look for damp shelter and crawl under doors and through gaps near the ground. Outdoor lights also attract the insects they feed on.
How to Keep Earwigs Out
- Pull mulch and leaf litter a few inches back from the foundation
- Fix dripping faucets, leaky pipes and clogged gutters
- Seal gaps around doors, windows, pipes and the bottom of siding
- Switch outdoor bulbs to yellow or warm LED lights
