How Timber and Farm Cycles Move Pests in O’Brien

O’Brien is a rural community in southern Suwannee County, where crop fields, pasture and planted pine surround widely spaced homes. Here, pests tend to move when the land changes. When a nearby stand of pine is harvested, or a field is disked after harvest, the mice and rats living there lose their cover almost overnight and go looking for new shelter. The closest shed, garage or house wall is usually where they end up, which is why many O’Brien homeowners notice droppings or chewing within weeks of logging or field work next door.

The pine woods also hold scorpions. Both the Florida bark scorpion and the smaller southern unstriped scorpion live in this part of North Florida, hiding under loose bark, boards, rocks and stacked firewood. They are most active on warm nights from spring through early fall, and they come indoors most often in homes where firewood is stacked against the walls or carried inside to burn. A sting is painful rather than dangerous for most people, but nobody wants one in a shoe or a bed sheet.

Handling Firewood Without Bringing in Scorpions

Stack firewood on a rack at least a few feet off the house and a few inches off the ground, and keep it covered on top only so it dries out. Wear gloves when you pick up a split, knock each piece against the rack before bringing it inside, and only carry in what you will burn that day. Seal gaps around doors and weep holes so scorpions and mice that do reach the walls cannot get past them.

Rivers, springs, farmland and wooded lots make this part of North Florida a busy place for pests. Fire ants build mounds in yards and pastures, mosquitoes breed near the river and low ground after rain, ticks wait in tall grass and woods, and mice and rats move into homes and barns when nights turn cool.
