Roaches

Cockroach Facts

Cockroaches are among the most common pests in Florida homes and businesses. Warm weather and high humidity keep them active all year, and a small problem can grow fast: a single German cockroach female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime.

Most roaches are flat, oval insects with long antennae and spiny legs, from about 1/2 inch to 2 inches long. They hide during the day in cracks, behind appliances and inside walls, then come out at night to feed on crumbs, grease, pet food, paper and even soap.

Common Cockroaches in Florida

  • American cockroach: reddish-brown and up to 2 inches long, often called a palmetto bug. It lives in drains, sewers and mulch and wanders indoors.
  • German cockroach: light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, about 1/2 inch long. It breeds indoors, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms, and is the hardest roach to get rid of.
  • Smokybrown cockroach: shiny, dark brown and a little over an inch long. It lives around trees, gutters and attics.
  • Florida woods cockroach: dark brown to black and slow-moving, known for the strong odor it gives off when disturbed.

Signs of a Cockroach Problem

  • Roaches scattering when you turn on a light
  • Droppings that look like black pepper or coffee grounds in drawers and cabinets
  • Brown egg cases behind appliances and furniture
  • A musty, oily odor in heavier infestations

Why Cockroaches Matter

Cockroaches pick up bacteria from drains and garbage and can spread it to food and counters. Their droppings and shed skins are a well-known trigger for allergies and asthma, especially in children. Read more about cockroach health concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cockroaches

Roaches, especially American cockroaches (palmetto bugs), often come in from outside through drains, gaps under doors and around pipes, looking for water and shelter. Florida’s heat and humidity keep them active all year, so even clean homes see them.

Cockroaches can carry bacteria from drains and garbage onto food and counters, and their droppings and shed skins are a common trigger for allergies and asthma, especially in children.

German cockroaches are small, light brown roaches with two dark stripes behind the head. You usually see them in kitchens and bathrooms, often during the day when the infestation is large. They breed indoors and need professional treatment.

Most customers see a big drop in activity within the first couple of weeks after treatment, though heavy German cockroach infestations can take follow-up visits. Our quarterly 4 Seasons Pest Control service treats your home right away and returns every season, with no long-term contract. If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra charge.
