Pest Management in Food Production Facilities
Food and beverage plants are among the most closely audited buildings in Florida. One beetle in finished product or a rodent dropping on a pallet can cost a production run or a customer. Florida Bug Control’s commercial team builds programs for processors, bottlers, commercial bakeries and packaging operations.
Audit standards vary depending on who certifies your plant. So we start by learning which ones apply to you, then set up service and paperwork to match. The aim is a pest-free plant and records your auditor can follow.
Pests Food Plants Deal With
Stored product pests are the biggest risk: sawtoothed grain beetles, flour beetles, cigarette beetles, weevils and Indianmeal moths that live in grain, flour, spices and other dry ingredients. German cockroaches settle in warm, wet areas around processing lines, motors and drains. Drain flies and fruit flies breed in floor drains and sugary residue, and house flies gather at dock doors and dumpsters. Roof rats and mice get in through dock doors and gaps around utility lines. Florida’s heat and humidity keep all of them active most of the year.
Inspection and Service Plan
The first visit is a full site survey, inside and out. The inspector walks receiving, raw material storage, production, packaging, warehousing, break rooms and the exterior. They also learn your production schedule and audit requirements. From that we write a scope of service that spells out:
- Which areas are covered and how often
- Where monitoring devices and traps go
- Conditions that need correcting, such as gaps, worn door seals or product spillage
- Who your designated contact is
Ongoing Service and Reporting
Technicians follow the scope of service and work around your production runs. Treatments are timed and placed to keep them away from exposed product. Each visit includes checking monitors, recording activity and treating where needed. After every visit, the technician tells your designated contact what was found and treated, along with any fixes we recommend. Over time those records show trends your quality team can act on. For fly-specific programs, see commercial fly control.
