Commercial Tick Control

Florida Bug Control service van

Ticks at work? It is not only kennels, groomers and vet clinics. More offices, shops and hotels now welcome dogs, and ticks go wherever dogs go.

The brown dog tick is the species most often found indoors, and it is common across Florida. It can complete its whole life cycle inside a building. It prefers dogs but will bite people when no dog is around. It is reddish brown, related to spiders and mites, and a fed female can swell to about 1/2 inch. Adults can live for months without feeding, which is why follow-up visits matter.

Where ticks hide indoors

Brown dog ticks tend to crawl upward. Look behind baseboards and window and door casings, along crown moulding, in curtains, behind picture frames, inside bookcases and cabinets, in the seams of upholstered furniture and under rug edges. Many businesses only find out they have ticks when someone sees one climbing a wall.

Inspection

Your technician starts by asking where ticks have been seen, where dogs spend time and whether any dead, swollen females have turned up. A female lays a large batch of eggs and then dies, so the eggs are usually close to where she was found. Hatchlings, called seed ticks, are tiny and may be tucked into cracks in that same room. We note every finding, and you are welcome to walk the inspection with us.

Before treatment

  • Vacuum floors, baseboards and upholstered seating, then seal the bag and put it in an outside trash can.
  • Wash or replace dog bedding.
  • Clear clutter along walls so cracks and baseboards can be reached.
  • Ask the dog’s owner to have a veterinarian treat the animal before service.

Treatment and follow-up

We treat the cracks, baseboards and hiding spots found during the inspection, plus outdoor areas where dogs rest. Keep people and animals out of treated rooms until surfaces dry. Because adult ticks can go months without feeding and eggs hatch over time, a follow-up visit is part of the plan. After each visit, your designated contact hears what was found and treated. If ticks come back between scheduled visits, we come back and re-treat at no charge. Learn more about the brown dog tick.
