Tick Facts
- Size: About 1/8 inch for most unfed adults, swelling to several times that size after a full blood meal
- Location: Found statewide in Florida. Common species include the brown dog tick, American dog tick, lone star tick and blacklegged tick
- Color: Usually reddish brown to dark brown, and some species have white or silvery markings
- Appearance: Hard ticks have a firm plate on the back and look flat and teardrop shaped before feeding. Soft ticks lack that plate and have a wrinkled, leathery look.
Tick Behavior
Ticks live entirely on blood. They are not insects. Like spiders and mites, they are arachnids, and adults have eight legs. They fall into two main families. Hard ticks, such as the brown dog tick, stay attached for days while they feed. Soft ticks feed quickly, often at night, and are mostly tied to bird and animal nests.
Each life stage after the egg needs a blood meal, taken from mammals, birds or reptiles, and people are fair game. Many hard ticks find hosts by climbing grass or brush and waiting with their front legs held out. A bite usually doesn’t hurt, which is why ticks can go unnoticed. Remove one promptly and watch the spot for the next few weeks.
