Bug Infestations
True bugs live nearly everywhere, from treetops and lawns to ponds and streams. They come in a wide range of sizes. A bed bug is roughly the size of an apple seed, while giant water bugs can grow to two inches or more. Most species live on land, but some spend their whole lives in water, and backswimmers and other aquatic bugs dive below the surface carrying their own air supply. Others, such as water striders, are semi-aquatic and skate on top of the water or along the shoreline.
For the bugs that wander into houses, limiting their way in is the best prevention. Seal cracks and holes in exterior walls, especially where pipes and utility lines enter. Trim trees and shrubs so branches do not touch the house. Keep attics, crawl spaces and garages dry and well ventilated, since damp spots attract many insects.
Signs of a True Bug Problem, Indoors and Out
Because the group covers everything from lawn pests to blood feeders, the clues depend on which bug you have. Here is what the common Florida problems tend to look like:
- Chinch bugs: yellowing patches in St. Augustinegrass that turn brown, often starting in hot, sunny spots along driveways and sidewalks. Part the grass at the edge of a patch and you may see tiny black-and-white adults and reddish nymphs in the thatch.
- Stink and leaf-footed bugs: groups of nymphs on tomatoes, citrus or other fruit, hard or discolored spots where they fed, and a sharp odor when disturbed.
- Bed bugs: small dark spots on mattress seams and headboards, shed skins, and itchy bites in rows or clusters. See bed bugs.
- Kissing bugs and other night fliers: an occasional bug drawn to porch lights, or found near pet bedding, woodpiles or wildlife dens.
Outdoor problems peak in Florida’s warm months, and chinch bug damage is usually worst during hot, dry stretches before the rainy season settles in. Indoors, most true bugs are accidental visitors that wandered in from the yard or rode in on plants, furniture or luggage.
A steady stream of the same bug indoors usually means a source close by, such as an infested potted plant near the door, a light left on beside an entry, or a bed bug population in one bedroom. Note where you find them and when, since that pattern is the fastest way to trace them back.
Keep garbage in sealed containers and take it out often. Replace worn weatherstripping and repair cracked mortar or gaps around the foundation and windows. Stack firewood well away from the house and up off the ground. For help with a stubborn problem, Florida Bug Control offers free inspections.
