Sanitation Measures:

The most effective rat control begins with prevention. Trash should be disposed of properly, and sanitary conditions should be maintained throughout the home.

Exclusion:

When pack rats become a pest problem in and around structures, exclusion can be the most effective method. The same methods used to exclude Norway rats and roof rats from buildings can be used to exclude pack rats, also known as woodrats. Since several species of pack rats are nimble climbers, all entrances to building should be closed. Openings in the building foundation and any openings for water pipes, electric wires, sewer pipes, drain spouts, and/or vents should be sealed. Also check for openings in attic vents, broken roof shingles, or other gaps next to the eaves. Make sure doors, windows, and screens fit tightly. Coarse steel wool, wire screen, and lightweight sheet metal are suitable materials for plugging gaps and holes.
