Preventative Bee Monitoring

Florida Bug Control service van

When a honey bee colony gets crowded, part of it leaves with a queen to find a new home. In Florida this happens most often in spring, though it can occur in other warm months too. The group, called a swarm, may hang in a cluster on a branch, wall or sign while scouts search for a sheltered cavity such as a wall void, soffit, utility box or gap in the roofline. Most bee work happens after the fact, once a swarm has landed or a hive has been built, and removal can be costly. Prevention aims to keep bees from choosing your building at all. Florida Bug Control offers two preventive options.

Both begin with an inspection. The technician first asks where and when bees have been seen, then checks the property to confirm that no swarm or active hive is already there and to plan the right approach.

Scout Trap Placement & Monitoring Program

This option is built for smaller commercial buildings. Before a swarm moves into a new home, scout bees fly out to look for cavities and then report back. The scout trap uses a pheromone lure to draw those scouts in and hold them on a sticky board. A scout that never returns cannot lead the swarm to your building. Plan on one trap for roughly every 2,000 square feet of structure.

Note: The trap is a preventive tool, not a barrier. A passing swarm may still stop to rest on or near your property. Since no scouts are recruiting it to stay, the swarm should move on after its rest.

Assembly: Bend the black outer cover into a tent. Thread the tie through the holes to hold the cover in shape, leaving a loop for hanging. Fold the glue board with the sticky surface facing in and slide it inside the cover. Then push the closed pheromone tube through the opening at the top so its end sits inside the glue board.

Placement: Hang the trap by its tie on or close to the building, seven to ten feet off the ground. One trap covers a building of up to about 2,000 square feet.

Routine Monitoring: The technician checks each trap every quarter and replaces the glue board and pheromone tube at each visit.

Coverage: Scout trap monitoring is serviced quarterly and can be added to new or existing commercial pest control service. There is no long-term contract. If bee activity comes back between scheduled visits, Florida Bug Control returns and treats again at no charge. Call 1-855-624-2847 to set up an inspection.
