Cockroach Facts
- Name: English speakers borrowed “cockroach” from the Spanish cucaracha and reshaped it into a more familiar-sounding word.
- Species: Thousands of species exist worldwide, but only a few invade homes. Florida’s most common are German, American, smokybrown and Australian cockroaches.
- Size: From about 1/2 inch for a German cockroach to roughly 1.5 to 2 inches for an American cockroach.
- Appearance: Flat, oval bodies, six spiny legs and long antennae, built for running fast and squeezing into narrow cracks.
Cockroach Behavior
Cockroaches are tough and adaptable. A spotless house is not automatically safe, because roaches only need food, water and a place to hide, and even a clean kitchen offers all three. They prefer starches, sweets, grease and meat, but they will eat almost anything when food runs short, including paper, glue, soap and hair.
Inside a home they are a problem. They carry bacteria on their bodies and leave allergens behind, which matters in houses and in businesses that handle food. Outdoors they do useful work by breaking down dead plants and other organic debris. In Florida’s heat, outdoor species such as the palmetto bug stay active most of the year.
