- Color: Most acrobat ants are black to light brown, but a few vary in color from yellowish-brown to dark brown, and the heart-shaped abdomen is usually darker than the rest of the body.

Acrobat ants get their name from their ability to acrobatically raise their abdomen over their thorax and head as if they were performing a balancing act, especially when disturbed. Best viewed from above, the abdomen is shaped like a heart.
