- Color: longhorn crazy ants are dark brown to nearly black; tawny and Caribbean crazy ants are reddish brown
Crazy Ant Behavior
Foragers dart in random directions and double back instead of marching in tidy lines.
The tawny crazy ant is an invader from South America, native to the region around Argentina and Brazil. It has since spread through Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia. Where it builds up heavily, it can push out red imported fire ants and crowd out native ants and other small animals, which makes its spread a real concern for the Southeast.
Control is hard. Colonies have many queens spread out across a property, and they nest in almost any sheltered gap, moist or dry. They often move into air conditioning units and electrical boxes, where heaps of ants can short out the equipment.
