- Name: Also called larger yellow ants
- Location: Much of the United States, more common up north than in Florida
- Size: Workers are about 4 to 5 mm (3/16 inch)
- Color: Yellow to honey colored
- Behavior: Release a lemon or citronella scent when crushed
Citronella Ant Behavior
These ants live almost entirely underground and feed on honeydew, a sweet liquid made by aphids and mealybugs that the ants tend on plant roots. Workers rarely come to the surface to forage. The exception is swarming season, when winged ants may fly into a house.
New colonies start with mating swarms of winged ants. People sometimes confuse these swarms with more destructive wood-eating insects, but citronella ants are mostly harmless. Because they spend nearly their whole lives in the soil, it is easy to live near a colony for years without knowing it is there.
