Big-Headed Ant Facts
- Appearance: The name comes from the major workers, whose heads look oversized for their bodies. The front part of a major’s head is lined with fine grooves, and the rear part is smooth and glossy.
- Colony types: Each colony produces two worker forms: large-headed majors and smaller minors that do most of the foraging.
- Color: Light brown to reddish brown.
- Size: Majors measure about 1/8 inch and minors about 1/16 inch.
Big-Headed Ant Behavior
Indoor big-headed ant problems nearly always start in the yard. The ants nest in soil outside and send foragers in through foundation cracks, gaps around pipes and door thresholds. Outside they collect honeydew from aphids and scale insects, along with dead insects and small soil animals. Indoors they go after protein and greasy foods, including pet food. Workers keep busy trails between nest and food, and because each colony has several queens, it can split and spread quickly. In Florida they are one of the ants most often found around homes.
