Field Ant Behavior
Field ants make up a large and varied genus spread across much of the Northern Hemisphere. Their main food is honeydew, the sugary liquid given off by aphids, mealybugs and scale insects. They also hunt small insects for protein.
With so many species, habits change from one field ant to the next. Most nest in soil in open, sunny spots, often next to a tree, fence post, sidewalk edge or rock, or under yard debris and fallen wood. Some cover their mounds with bits of leaves, grass stems or pine needles, which is where the name thatching ant comes from.
