How to Get Rid of Field Ants
First make sure they are field ants. Larger field ants are often mistaken for carpenter ants, which nest in wood and need a different plan. Seen from the side, a field ant has a bumpy, uneven thorax, while a carpenter ant’s is smooth and evenly curved. When in doubt, get them identified.
Most field ant nests stay outside, so the goal is usually to keep foragers out. Seal gaps in the foundation and around windows, and check where pipes, wires and cables enter the house. Pull mulch and pine straw a few inches back from the slab, where ants like to nest.
