How to Get Rid of Pavement Ants

How to Get Rid of Pavement Ants

When the nest is outdoors, keeping ants out of the house does most of the work. Caulk cracks along the slab edge, around door thresholds and where pipes enter, so foragers lose their way in. Wipe trails with soapy water or rubbing alcohol to erase the scent markers other workers follow. Then take away the reason to visit by cleaning up grease and sugary spills quickly and keeping food sealed.

For nests inside the home or in places you cannot seal off, ant bait is the usual answer. Workers carry the slow-acting bait back to the colony and share it, and over time it can reach the queens. Use baits carefully and place them where children and pets cannot get to them.

Getting Ahead of Slab Ants: A Homeowner’s Game Plan

Start by confirming the species. Look-alikes such as big-headed ants are far more common in Florida than true pavement ants and respond differently, so get the ant identified before buying anything.

  • Find the colony’s doors: follow trails back to cracks, expansion joints or the edge of the slab, and mark those spots.
  • Test their appetite: set a dab of peanut butter and a drop of honey side by side near the trail. Whichever draws more ants tells you whether a protein-based or sugar-based bait is the better choice.
  • Let baits work: place them on active trails, leave the ants alone while they feed, and expect results to take days to a couple of weeks.
  • Change the landscape: pull mulch and stones back from the foundation, trim plants that touch the house, and fix leaky faucets and sprinkler heads that keep soil wet beside the slab.

Common mistakes:

  • Spraying a household insecticide on trails or around baits. It kills the foragers that would carry bait home and can scatter the colony.
  • Pouring boiling water into cracks, which rarely reaches the queens and kills nearby plants.

Professional ant service starts with an inspection to identify the species and locate nests along the slab, in landscape beds and at entry points. Treatment is matched to the species, usually combining baiting with targeted treatment around the foundation, and a follow-up visit checks whether activity has dropped. The pavement ant infestation page explains where to look.
