Identifying Fire Ant Infestations
Red imported fire ants live throughout Florida. Outdoors, look for a dome of loose, crumbly soil with no hole on top, often in a sunny lawn, along a driveway or next to a slab. New mounds tend to pop up after heavy rain. The ants eat insects, seeds, dead animals and sweet or greasy food, and they will follow those smells indoors. Kitchens, garages and laundry rooms are common entry points, especially after floods or dry spells.
Preventing a Fire Ant Infestation
Close the openings first. Seal cracks in the slab and gaps around doors, windows and utility lines.
Then cut back on what draws them inside:
- Fix dripping faucets and leaks, and keep water from pooling by the foundation.
- Keep food in sealed containers and clean up crumbs and spills right away.
- Use trash cans with tight lids.
- Pick up pet food bowls once pets finish eating.
In the yard, wear closed shoes and socks, and look at the ground before you sit, kneel or put down a child or a pet carrier. Most stings come from standing on an unseen mound. Treatment options are on how to get rid of fire ants.
