Spraying the ants on the counter rarely solves the problem. A colony may be split between a main nest and several satellite nests, some indoors and some out in the yard. Once the nests are treated, replace rotted or hollowed boards and keep wood from touching soil. Outside, remove infested stumps, dead limbs and old landscape timbers, stack firewood off the ground and away from the house, and trim branches that reach the roof.
