What Jasper’s Fields and Older Homes Mean for Pests

Jasper is the seat of Hamilton County, just south of the Georgia line, and the town is ringed by row crops, pasture and planted pine. When those fields are harvested in late summer and fall, the insects and rodents that lived in them have to go somewhere. Field crickets are usually first, showing up by the hundreds around porch lights and garage doors in August and September, and camel crickets follow into damp garages, laundry rooms and crawl areas as the nights cool.

In town, many of Jasper’s homes are older brick and wood-frame houses with attics, porches and detached garages. Those structures give paper wasps plenty of protected eaves and soffits for their nests, and colonies grow fastest from June through September. Older attics also tend to have gaps at the gable vents and roofline, which is how mice and the occasional flying squirrel get in once frost settles over the farmland in late November and December.

Cutting Down on the Fall Cricket Invasion

• Switch porch and garage lights to yellow bug bulbs or warm LEDs, or turn them off when not needed in August and September.
• Install door sweeps on garage entry doors and exterior doors where you can see daylight underneath.
• Keep mulch, pine straw and grass clippings pulled back several inches from the foundation.
• Run a dehumidifier in damp garages or laundry rooms where camel crickets collect.

Rivers, springs, farmland and wooded lots make this part of North Florida a busy place for pests. Fire ants build mounds in yards and pastures, mosquitoes breed near the river and low ground after rain, ticks wait in tall grass and woods, and mice and rats move into homes and barns when nights turn cool.
