Pest Control in Key Largo, FL

Pest Control in Key Largo, FL

Key Largo is the first of the Florida Keys in Monroe County, with waterfront homes, marinas, vacation rentals and resorts. Florida Bug Control provides residential and commercial pest control for homes and businesses in and around Key Largo.

Why Pests Behave Differently in Key Largo

Key Largo stretches along the Overseas Highway with the Atlantic on one side and Florida Bay and Blackwater Sound on the other, and much of the undeveloped land in between is mangrove and tropical hardwood hammock. Protected areas like John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park and the Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge in North Key Largo keep a lot of that habitat intact. The mangrove fringes produce black salt marsh mosquitoes, which can hatch in huge numbers after high tides and summer rains flood the low ground, then ride the wind into neighborhoods on both sides of US 1.

Life on the water adds its own issues. Boats, dock boxes and canal-front storage sheds sit closed up for weeks at a time, which suits roaches, spiders and paper wasps that build under railings and boat covers. Almost everything arrives by truck down the 18-Mile Stretch or Card Sound Road, and cardboard deliveries and grocery boxes are a quiet way German roaches reach island kitchens. Vacation rentals that change hands every few days can also pick up hitchhiking pests faster than full-time homes.

Tips for Elevated Homes and Ground-Level Storage

• Many Keys homes are raised, and the enclosed ground floor or open space below collects boxes, gear and standing water. Keep stored items in sealed plastic bins, not cardboard.
• Tip out kayaks, buckets and boat covers after every rain.
• Check under stairs, dock railings and boat lifts monthly for wasp nests while they are still small.
• Unpack grocery and delivery boxes outside and recycle them right away.

Life on the water brings its own pests. Salt marsh mosquitoes and no-see-ums are active near mangroves and shorelines, roof rats move along palms and docks, and the warm, humid climate keeps cockroaches and ants busy year-round in homes, rentals and businesses.
