Pest Control in Florida City, FL

Pest Control in Florida City, FL

Florida City is the southernmost city in Miami-Dade County and the gateway to the Everglades and the Florida Keys, surrounded by farmland and nurseries. Florida Bug Control provides residential and commercial pest control for homes and businesses in and around Florida City.

Farm Fields, the Everglades and Pests in Florida City

Florida City sits at the very bottom of the mainland, where Florida’s Turnpike ends at US 1 and the road west to the main entrance of Everglades National Park begins. Much of the land around town is planted in winter vegetables, and the growing season runs through the cooler months. When fields are harvested and disked in spring, field mice and cotton rats lose their cover all at once and spread into the nearest houses, sheds and businesses. Packing areas and fruit stands also draw flies while produce is moving.

To the west, the edge of the Everglades is close enough that summer brings heavy mosquito pressure, especially after the first big storms of the rainy season soak the marl prairie and rock-plowed fields. Nurseries around the area grow palms, ornamentals and hedge plants, and those plant lots can carry whiteflies and ants into new landscapes. The motels and campgrounds along US 1 near the Turnpike serve a constant stream of travelers headed to the Keys and the park, and that traffic can bring bed bugs and roaches along with it.

Protecting a Home That Borders Crop Land

Before harvest starts in spring, walk the outside of your home and garage and seal any gap wider than a pencil with steel wool and caulk or metal flashing. Rodents follow the edges of fields, so keep a cleared strip of bare ground or gravel between the planting and your walls. Store pet food, bird seed and seed stock in metal containers, and set snap traps along the inside of sheds and garages so you know right away if mice have moved in.

South Florida’s heat and humidity never really let up, so pests stay active all year. Small ants trail into kitchens and bathrooms, palmetto bugs come in from drains and landscaping, roof rats travel along palm trees and power lines into attics, and mosquitoes breed after every rain.
