Living on the River: Pests in Dowling Park

Dowling Park sits right on the Suwannee River in southwestern Suwannee County, with river swamp and hardwood floodplain on the low ground and homes, cottages and the Advent Christian Village campus on the higher land above it. The Suwannee rises after heavy rain far upstream in its Georgia headwaters, and when it spills into the low woods it leaves standing pools and soaked leaf litter behind as it falls. Those pockets are prime ground for floodwater mosquitoes, which can hatch in huge numbers a week or two after the water drops, often long after the rain itself has been forgotten.

High water pushes other pests uphill, too. Rats and mice that live in the floodplain lose their cover when the river comes up and move toward the nearest dry buildings: garages, sheds, storage rooms and the crawl areas of homes along the bluff. Through the warm months, the big live oaks and water oaks along the river also hold plenty of spiders, and webs build up quickly on screened porches, under eaves and around outdoor lighting where insects collect at night.

Areas We Serve Near Dowling Park

We serve homes and cottages throughout Dowling Park, including residences around the Advent Christian Village and the river properties nearby. From there our coverage runs northeast to Live Oak and across the Suwannee into Lafayette County, including Mayo. Homeowners on both sides of the river get the same service and the same free re-treatment guarantee if pests come back between visits.

What to Do After the Suwannee Goes Down

• Within a few days of the river falling, tip out buckets, boats, tarps and planters that caught water.
• Rake soggy leaves away from the house so the ground near the walls dries faster.
• Check sheds and garages for droppings or gnawed bags, since rodents often move in right after high water.
• Plan evening walks near the riverbank for later in the season, when the post-flood mosquito hatch has died down.

Rivers, springs, farmland and wooded lots make this part of North Florida a busy place for pests. Fire ants build mounds in yards and pastures, mosquitoes breed near the river and low ground after rain, ticks wait in tall grass and woods, and mice and rats move into homes and barns when nights turn cool.
