Lice
Pests We Treat
Lice Facts
Head lice are tiny, wingless insects about the size of a sesame seed. They live on the human scalp, feed on blood several times a day and glue their eggs, called nits, to the base of hair strands. They are common among school-age children and are not a sign of a dirty home.
How Lice Spread
- Mostly through direct head-to-head contact during play, sports or sleepovers
- Less often through shared hats, brushes, helmets, pillows or headphones
- Lice cannot jump or fly, and they cannot survive more than a day or two off a person
- Pets do not carry or spread human head lice
Signs of Head Lice
- Itching on the scalp, neck and behind the ears
- Small white or yellowish nits stuck firmly to hair close to the scalp
- Live lice moving in the hair, often easiest to see behind the ears and at the nape of the neck
Treating Head Lice
Head lice are treated on the person, not in the house. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about lice treatments, follow the directions carefully, and comb out nits with a fine-tooth lice comb. Check everyone in the household.
Cleaning Up at Home
- Wash bedding, hats and recently worn clothes in hot water and dry on high heat
- Seal items that cannot be washed in a plastic bag for two weeks
- Soak combs and brushes in hot water
- Vacuum floors and furniture where the infested person sat or lay
Pesticide sprays and fumigation are not needed for head lice and can expose your family to chemicals for no benefit.
Mystery Bites That Are Not Lice
If you are getting bitten at home and it is not lice, the cause may be bed bugs, fleas or mites brought in by birds or rodents. Florida Bug Control can inspect your home, identify the real source and treat it. Call 1-855-624-2847 to schedule an inspection.
